Hadrians Wall, Roman Britain & the Scottish Borders

Explore the borderlands between Scotland and England and learn all about the incredible Hadrians Wall on this guided day tour from Edinburgh.

From Edinburgh, you will travel south on the old Roman Dere Street which linked the ports in south England with the ancient city of York, past Hadrian’s Wall to the Roman settlements in Central Scotland.

Your first stop on this tour will be in the Border town of Jedburgh, a historic Burgh that lies only 12 miles (approx 20 km) north of the Scotland- England border. The town is dominated by a magnificent 12th century Augustinian Abbey.

Continuing south the tour stops at the edge of Cheviot Hills. This crossing point between Scotland and England runs close to the ancient Roman road and has formed the border between the two countries for the past 700 years.

The tour continues toward Hadrian's Wall.  The tour follows the road that will take you to the south side of the wall, stopping at Steel Rigg. Walk beside the wall and experience the isolation that Roman foot soldiers would have experienced as they guarded their empire from the `barbarians´ from the north.

Optional: Explore the archaeoligical site of Vindolanda. Here you can discover how the lives were for those who lived at this Roman fort, see items such as jewelry, pottery, shoes and more. Return to Edinburgh through the Galloway hills in the early evening.
