Volendam & Zaanse Schans

Embark on a day trip to the historic windmills of Zaanse Schans, where you’ll learn the secrets of Dutch cheese-making. Stroll through the picturesque streets of Volendam, immersing yourself in its charming fishing village atmosphere and watch artisans bring tradition to life as they craft clogs and other artifacts.

After a 20-minute drive out of Amsterdam, you will arrive at Zaanse Schans, an historical heritage site famous for its typical 18th and 19th century architecture, its preserved windmills and old Zaanse homes. Explore the impressive surroundings and continue your journey to Edam, also known as the Pearl of the Zuiderzee. Time seems to have stood still here as the cheese trade and boat building industry turned Edam into a thriving commercial city in the 14th and 15th centuries. Stroll through the historical streets and moat before visiting a cheesemaker where you will learn how the famous Edammer cheese is made.

Last stop on the tour is the picturesque fishing village of Volendam. Follow your guide through the village, admire the colourful houses, the boats in the harbour and visit the kitchen of the syrup waffle museum. Eat some local fish before returning to Amsterdam.
